| Title: Assistant Civil Engineer for Specifications and Estimating |
The Capital Division at the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) manages the entire capital process from start to finish, including scope meetings, design, procurement of contractors and construction completion. We are proud to be the country’s largest employer of landscape architects, with over 100 currently on staff working on in-house and consultant-managed designs. We also have a large pool of architects and engineers, in addition to resident engineers who oversee the daily activities of contractors, budget and procurement staff, and many other talented employees. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES • Under supervision, write site work specifications of advanced complexity. • Work with the Sustainability Coordinator on developing and refining details on specifications for sustainable landscapes. • Work with the Deputy Director to develop detailed specifications for coastal areas subject to flooding. • Investigate, research and propose solutions for technical systems. • Utilizing AutoCAD and other software, prepare and/or supervise the preparation of standard detailed drawings and develop specifications and cost estimates for proposed details. • Review sites and designs with construction and maintenance personnel. Conduct occasional site inspections for quality assurance. • Conduct research on new materials and methods of construction. • Serve as an agency technical expert and answer questions on technical matters. Participate as a committee member of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), which includes voting on technical specifications and recommended test methods. Remain informed of requirements and guidelines promulgated by other governing bodies including the United States Access Board and Consumer Product Safety Commission. • Participate in training agency consultants and in-house landscape architects on how to write custom specifications and use Parks standard specifications, details and prices. • Assist in analyzing data to produce standard price list.
1. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college and one (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or 2. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college. A master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in civil engineering.
A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable. This position is exempt from NYC residency requirements. PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS 1. Strong knowledge of sustainable and universal design principles. 2. Strong technical/engineering skills. 3. Ability to conduct research and solve technical problems. 4. Strong technical writing abilities. 5. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and AutoCAD. 6. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. 7. Driver license valid in New York State.
Salary: $55,000 - $70,000 plus excellent benefits
